The only thing is that I still can’t figure out how to run MinimServer automatically when the FUEL boots up. But don’t worry, MinimServer will still run. More specifically, the ps command that is required by the startup script of MinimServer can not be satisfied by the one provided by busybox. The reason for bringing this up is that there are compatibility issue with those startup and shutdown scripts provided by MinimServer that you might come across. For those familiar with Linux, running command ls -al /bin will show many commands are actually linked to busybox. The Linux in the FUEL make use of an application called busybox which replace many of the Linux commands – supposedly making it more lightweight. It only took me one evening to get it working.

The music just didn’t get indexed probably and it is very unstable. The MiniDLNA that comes with the FUEL is unusable especially if you have a big library. MinimServer runs on Java so you will need to install that first. I can now stream up to 24/192, DXD and DSD files from the LaCie FUEL. Great news! Just managed to install and run MinimServer on the LaCie FUEL (standard firmware 3.3.0.032, it has a ARMv7 processor).

It is quite amazing to have a portable wireless Linux machine with so much storage, all packaged in an attractive case. Luckily the FUEL is based on the Linux operating system, which means you can do quite a lot with it. However it use MiniDLNA as the media server which I found have its limitations when dealing with large music collections. The LaCie FUEL is a nice little portal wireless storage (up to 2T) device that can store all your music collection and stream them based on the UPnP standard.
